Dr. Washington is a physician whose wide-ranging clinical and health services research has helped improve patient care and population health, and whose creative, inclusive administrative leadership created major change at three leading academic health centers. As Chancellor for Health Affairs, Duke University and President/CEO of Duke University Health Systems; Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at UCSF; and Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine, and CEO of the Health System at UCLA, Dr. Washington has spearheaded innovation in education, research, clinical care, and population health improvement. In each of these roles, he led a strategic planning process that resulted in major change including greater interdisciplinary collaboration on campus and in the community. His tenures have been marked by effective, inclusive leadership that allowed new ideas and involvement from across disciplines and backgrounds. National leadership roles include Founding Chair of the Board of Governors of the PatientCentered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), member of the governing Council of the Institute of Medicine, inaugural member of the Scientific Management Review Board of the National Institutes of Health, and member of the boards of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, California Wellness Foundation (Chair), California Health Care Foundation (Chair),Common Sense Media, and American Social Health Association.
