Esther S. Takeuchi
Esther S. Takeuchi is Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at Stony Brook University. Dr. Takeuchi invented the lithium/silver vanadium oxide battery that enabled widespread implementation of implantable cardiac defibrillators, saving millions of human lives worldwide. In academe, as Director of the Center for Mesoscale Transport Properties Energy Frontier Research Center (2014-2018, 2018-2022), she has transformed how batteries are studied with a focus on understanding and controlling electrochemical phenomena over multiple length and time scales. Her investigations have demonstrated the profound impacts of structure, crystallite/particle size, aggregation and electrode architecture on electrochemistry. Further, her research features multi-functional materials including the reduction-displacement paradigm that has been a hallmark of her career.
