Chemerinsky's field of study lies in constitutional law, federal practice, civil rights and civil liberties, and appellate litigation. Respected scholar and public intellectual in American constitutional law. He has written many influential books, and hundreds of book chapters, articles, and essays in scholarly journals and in the popular press. He is also a respected appellate lawyer, having argued in the Supreme Court and other courts of appeals, and frequent lecturer to judges and bar associations. Chemerinsky was named the most influential person in legal education by National Jurist magazine.
