Research has focused on stereochemistry and conformational analysis of small molecules. He has authored or co-authored three seminal books in these fields, in addition to over 300 original publications. His work in conformational analysis has dealt with the physical and chemical investigation of substituted cyclohexanes and their heterocyclic analogs. Since retirement his main interest has been in chemical education both in the United States and elsewhere, and especially in professional relations with chemical scientists in Latin America.
