Research centers on the effects of experience on the central nervous system. He has studied how experience affects sound localization behavior and how it alters the anatomical and physiological properties of neurons in the central auditory pathway of barn owls. He has defined the auditory localization pathways in the forebrain and midbrain and has demonstrated quantitatively the increased capacity for neuronal plasticity that exists in these pathways during the juvenile period of development. He has elucidated fundamental mechanisms that underlie functional plasticity in the central nervous system.
