Chief Science Advisor of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy; Professor of Physics and Astronomy. One of the first astronomers to develop the field of infrared observations from its inception in the 1960's to near dominance of astronomy today. Was the first person to observe the nucleus of the Milky Way, the first to discover high-mass protostars in the Orion nebula, and one of the first co-discoverers of brown dwarf stars.
