Past research focused on precise measurements in quantum electrodynamics and special relativity. He has been the project leader during the design, construction, and commissioning of the CERN large electron-positron collider. He developed a superconducting r. f. cavity system to accelerate electron-position beams in a collider. He has been interested in understanding the kinetic behavior of the beam relaxation caused by incoherent synchrotron radiation in high energy electron storage rings. He is now developing a tunable electromagnetic detector for gravitational waves using superconductivity r. f. coupled cavities.
