Research has centered on protein structure-function relations as exhibited by a small protein of the mitochrondrial respiratory chain, namely, cytochrome c. Following determination of its amino acid sequence in the late 1950s, the 3rd protein for which this was accomplished, he established the sequences of the cytochromes c of numerous species, leading to the first quantitative demonstration in 1967 that such sequences clearly reflect the relative phylogenetic distances of species. His research properties of the protein, using numerous site-directed mutatnts of the cytochromes c of a range of species.
