Elly T. Katabira, M.D., is a professor of medicine at Makerere College of Health Sciences, where he is a former deputy dean for research in the Faculty of Medicine. He is a neurophysician who has also been working in the field of HIV/AIDS care and research since 1985. Outraged that there was no proper treatment for AIDS patients, and largely through his own efforts (and at a time when there was no donor support for it), he started the first AIDS treatment center anywhere in Africa. Katabira subsequently co-founded the biggest and most effective AIDS support organization in East or Central Africa. He subsequently became President of the main international society that coordinates AIDS research, support and treatment around the world, the International AIDS Society. He is a founding member of the Academic Alliance of AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa, and a founding member of the AIDS Support Organization, where he still serves as its medical adviser. Dr. Katabira received his medical education in Uganda, England, Scotland, and the United States.
