Professor Eisenstein was the Alice Freeman Palmer Professor Emerita of History at the University of Michigan. She passed way in January, 2016. She was responsible for the abridgment and translation of versions of the 1979 two volume book: The Printing Press as an agent of change continue to be issued in 2000. Her research also centered on attitudes toward the advent of printing in the Western world. Her several preliminary publications, covering aspects of the topic, have appeared during the past decade. Most recently it's been explored in a seminar entitled: Divine Art/Infernal Machine given (during Fall tern 1999) at the Folger Shakespeare Library. She was a fellow at the Humanities Research Center and Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences as well as a Resident Consultant at the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress. Her work has led to many prestigious awards such as the American Historical Association's Award for Scholarly Distinction and the Gutenberg Award.
