Professor Emerita of Anthropology, University of California, Berkley. Her work focuses around social organization, politics, social change, religion, migration, and the ethnography of Africa and North America. Best known for her study of social change caused by forced resettlement of the Gwembe Tonga in Zambia. Colson has made theoretical contributions through ethnography to the sub-disciplines of applied, development, and political anthropology. Like Boas, Kroeber, and Margaret Mead, she has worked to improve the status of women in academia.
