Research is focused on the cytoskeleton. He isolated the protein tubulin, which initiated the study of the biochemical properties of microtubules. His investigations on actomyosin led to a model of the relationship of an enzyme cucle to muscle contraction. His recent work has concentrated on the mechanism of the molecular motor kinesin. Current interest is how the cell controls the polymerization of actin and tubulin.
