I am a semi-retired (emeritus) Professor of Neurobiology, affiliated with the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. My research, before I closed my laboratory a number of years ago, centered on communication between neurons -- from studies of electrical synapses to the ways in which neurons acquire the specialized properties that allow them to transmit information at chemical synapses. I am currrently engaged in a writing project about my interests in the evolutionary and neurobiological roots of hierarchy and dominance in animals and people.
