He defended African National Congress (ANC) members accused of treason and appeared in several celebrated land tenure and forced removal defenses. President Mandela appointed Cameron to the High Court in 1994. He was elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal in 1999 and to the Constitutional Court in 2008. Cameron was a leading critic of President Thabo Mbeki's HIV/AIDS policies, and has been an open advocate for gay and lesbian causes since 1990. He was the Secretary of the Rhodes Trust in South Africa.  Himself living with HIV, he campaigns for testing, treatment and prevention, and against stigma.
