Dr. Edward Boyden is best known for his role in the development of optogenetics and for the subsequent discovery of several important light sensitive channels and pumps that are being used by hundreds of labs. He has also been a pioneer in automated patch clamping, whole-organism imaging, and, most recently, expansion microscopy. The latter is based on the novel idea of expanding cells and tissues so that fast conventional microscopes can achieve imaging of structures such as synapses, which formerly required slow, “super resolution” microscopy.
