Research focuses on physical-inorganic and bioinorganic chemistry; the application of a wide variety of spectroscopic methods and quantum mechanical calculations to define the electronic structure of transition metal sites and its contributions to physical properties and reactivity. He has defined the unique spectral features present in many metalloenzymes in terms of novel electronic structures which activate their metal centers for catalysis. He has also developed new spectroscopic methods which have opened up large areas of Bioinorganic and Inorganic Chemistry in terms of geometric and electronic struction/function correlations.
