Retired as president, chairman, and chief executive officer of Honeywell in 1988. He is a board member of the Yellowstone National Park Foundation, the national Humanities Center, and the Minneapolis Community Foundation. He serves on national advisory boards of the Environmental Defense Fund and of the National Park Conservation Association. He is a former chairman of the Ford Foundation, the Mayo Foundation, and Carleton College. He was a member of the Presidential-appointed- Japan-U.S. Economic Relations Group from 1979-81. He was chairman of the Commission on U.S.-Kapan Relations for the 21st Century, a public policy group from 1989-1992.
