His main area of research is in physical and chemical properties of non-alternant pie-systems, mainly azulenes, tropylium cations and fulvenes. Experimental and theoretical investigation of electronic spectra of organic compounds, mainly of azulenes, annulenes and related molecules. Molecular-orbital (MO) theory of organic compounds and its applications to ground-state and excited state properties of (mainly) non-alternant pie-systems. Graph-theoretical aspects of MO theory. Second order bond localisation. Organic photoelectron (PE) spectroscopy (theory and practice) of polyenes, polyines, aromatic systems, and molecules with non-conjugated pie-systems and/or lone pairs. Use of localized molecular orbitals for the interpretation of PE spectra.
