Ebonya L. Washington is the Laurans A. and Arlene Mendelson Professor of Economics and a professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University. She is one of the nation's leading experts in political economy. She has done pathbreaking work showing how politicians; family structure impacts how they vote, and documenting the move away from redistributive preferences among U.S. voters. Her explorations of the impact of race and racial preferences on voting, from the civil rights act through redistricting, are especially timely. She is also a broad scholar, with important work on the impact of welfare payments on well-being, on the impact of banking availability on low-income populations, and the effect of taxpayer subsidies to employer-sponsored insurance.
