Research focuses on processes of species formation and on the evolution of interactions between plants and animals, especially herbivorous insects. He has contributed to understanding genetic and phylogenetic aspects of specificity in such interactions, and genetic constraints on their evolution. He has contributed to the synthesis of modern evolutionary biology in a textbook and in essays, has helped to combat the anti-intellectual forces of creationism, and has played a role in promulgating the societal applications of evolutionary studies.
