In recent years, although he has continued to keep up with research in general Chinese art history, he has concentrated more and more on the interaction of Eastern and Western art, and on the Chinese art of the twentieth century, a subject which until recently was little studied or understood in the West. In addition to books and articles on the subject, he has helped to promote understanding by writing introductions to catalogues of exhibitions, and by support in the creation of the Gallery for Chinese painting at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.
