Donald W. Meinig
Professor Donald W. Meinig is the Maxwell Research Professor of Geography, Emeritus at Syracuse University. Prior to Syracuse, Meining held teaching positions at the University of Utah from 1951 to 1959. He is a historical geographer who wrote extensively about developing regional patterns of settlement and societies in the American West (Columbia Interior, Morman Country, Texas, Southwest); also influential on concepts of landscape interpretation. Meinig capped his career with four volumes of The Shaping of America: A Geographical Perspective on 500 Years of History (2004). His honors include Guggenheim Fellowship; Charles P. Daly Medal, American Geographical Society; Corresponding Fellow, British Academy; ACLS Haskins Lecturer; Honorary Doctorate, Syracuse University; Festschrift, Geographical Review (2009).
