Research has centered on American politics and political behavior. Topics include informal norms and behavioral patterns in the U.S. Senate, strategies of decision-making by members of the House of Representatives, the changing presidential nominating system and its consequences, the re-enfranchisement of Blacks in the South. Most recent research has been on political representation, using the Norwegian parliment as a contrast to representation in Congress.
