Debraj Ray is an economic theorist and development economist, who has made fundamental contributions to the study of coalition formation, polarization, and inequality. Using tools from game theory, he has provided original insights into how society forms itself into groups, and when or why those groups may hold polarized views, or be in conflict. He has also studied the economics of ethnic violence from both a theoretical and empirical perspective. Ray's book on Development Economist was described by the Chronicle of Higher Education as "a revolutionary textbook that takes the field by storm."
