Research focuses upon dynamic behavior in extended nonlinear systems. He has identified important phenomena and initiated major methods in the theory of completely integrable systems including multiphase averaging of nonlinear wavetrains, dispersive shocks and homoclinic orbits (whiskered tori) that leads to chaotic waves. His work combines mathematical theory liquid crystals, and neural dynamics.
