His current research deals with two major themes. The first has to do with the social and cultural organization of the indigenous peoples of South America, in which connection he has wriiten extensively on kinship theory. The second has to do with the human rights of indigenous people around the world. In this connection he has written on development and its discontents, as well as on ethnicity, multiculturalism and the state. He is currently working on a study of the Indian Question in the Americas.
