Research has centered on intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids. Discovered the malonyl coenzyme A regulatory system of fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis. Cloned sequenced carnitine palmitoyl transferases from liver and muscle. Proved that malonyl CoA inhibits carnitine palmitoyl transferase I directly.
