Professor Emeritus, Departments of Psychology and Linguistics. Research on language acquisition and its relation to cognition and communication, conducted in a crosslinguistic framework. Current work focuses on ways in which languages differ in mapping between concepts and linguistic forms, with special attention to typological/functional linguistics, structure and translation of narrative, and dynamics of language change. He writes and translates poetry, makes pen-and-ink drawings, and plays classical piano. His major research languages are Turkish, Russian, Spanish, Dutch, and German.
