John F. Hotchkis Professor of English. Book, Narrative and its Discontents (1989), offered one of the early initiatives of psychopoetics. Followed by The Novel and the Police (1992), which did much to extend the thinking of Foucault into literary genre study and, in the process, permanently altered the face of Victorian scholarship. It has become a classic work in the field. Comparable landmarks in gay studies followed, with his separate books on Barthes and on the Broadway musical. He was also writing on cinema in a series of widely noticed articles, a BFI volume on Fellini's 8 �, since translated into French and Chinese, and a regular column for Film Quarterly. In all his work, including his book on the shifting registers of Jane Austen's narrative discourse, there is--driven by the unique rigor and nuance of his own style--a continuous mesh of criticism and critique, with discrepancies of form in whatever medium leveraging unexpected revelations about cultural (including gender) assumptions.
