My interests center around the archaeology of the ancient Near East. Over the past five decades I have directed archaeological excavations in Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Russia. My interests concern the political and economic organization that connected different centers of early urban communities in the Bronze Age (ca. 4000-2000B.C.). Combining early textual records with the materials culture recovered from archaeological excavations we have elucidated the cultural interactions that brought the distinctive cultures from the Indus Valley to Mesopotamia and from Central Asia to the Arabian Peninsula into spheres of economic and political intearaction.
