Physician and scientist whose nearly four decades of groundbreaking research on adult leukemia and lymphoma showed adult acute leukemia can be cured. Showed importance of biomarkers, including gene and microRNA expression profiles, to classify hematologic malginancies resulting in the current internationally recognized World Health Organization classifications for these disorders. Served on boards of many professional organizations. Chaired the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Division of Cancer Treatment's Board of Scientific Counselors. Honors include elected membership in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and receipt of the Joseph H. Burchenal Clinical Research Award of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Distinguished Service Award for Scientific Achievement, the Henry M. Stratton Medal of the American Society of Hematology, and the David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award of the ASCO.
