Robert H. Goddard Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Provided theoretical and experimental foundations for aspects of heterogeneous combustion, flame dynamics and stabilization, ignition-extinction transition, and fuel oxidation mechanisms. Research has technological and social implications for propulsion, energy conversion and the environment. Former President of the Combustion Institute (2000-2004). Member of the National Academy of Engineering. Presently directs the Combustion Energy Frontier Research Center of the US Department of Energy, addressing issues related to future transportation fuels.
