Kouveliotou has made major discoveries in the transient universe, and devoted most of her work to the study of transient phenomena associated with gamma ray sources. Among her most distinguished accomplishments are the discovery of two distinct classes of gamma ray bursts, the first detection of X-ray bursts from a pulsar, the first identification of an optical counterpart of a GRB, and the identification of soft gamma ray repeaters with magnetars. Kouveliotou is also known for her observational campaigns to obtain critical observations on transient sources and putting together think tanks to understand the results.
