Research focuses on the use of radioautography (also called autoradiography) for the timing of cellular processes. He has thus found that newly-formed secretory proteins are promptly glycosylated in the Golgi apparatus. This finding has helped him elucidate how collagen is formed within fibroblasts and how the thyroid cell elaborates its hormone. He has clarified several other cell biology problems, that is, the renewal of all gastric and intestinal epithelia in about five days, the timing of spermatozoon formation, the mode of deposition of enamel and dentin, muscle growth from satellite cells and, in general, the continuity of protein and RNA renewal throughout the cells in the body.
