Charles M. Roessel

Dr. Charles Roessel is a journalist, photographer, educator, and currently the president of Diné College, the largest higher education institution serving American Indians and Alaska Natives. Roessel has had an extraordinary career as a photographer. His work has been published in Time, Newsweek, Arizona Highways and National Geographic. He was the first managing editor of Navajo Times Today, a daily newspaper (now a weekly again), and hired a team of Navajo journalists. Prior to his tenure in 1988, most of the journalists working at the Navajo Times were non-Navajos who had journalism experience. Roessel created an environment where Navajos began reporting on themselves.
