Rothman is the Artistic Director of the nonprofit Second Stage Theatre in New York, which she co-founded in 1979 with Robyn Goodman. The many highlights of her career, and her theatre, include Tina Howe's Painting Churches, Michael Weller's Spoils of War, August Wilson's Jitney, and Stephen Sondheim's first musical, Saturday Night. In 1987 she was the first woman director nominated for a Tony award. The theatre's mission is to give new life to contemporary American plays and to produce the world premieres of new plays by both established and emerging playwrights. A fundamental part of its mission is theatre education, accomplished through special performances for New York City school children, subscriber discussions with theatre artists, and an internship program. The company's mission also has expanded to commissioning a body of multigenerational plays, and the creation of a training base for young directors and a home base for mid-career directors.
