Research focuses on history and theory of property, and on the relationships between property and environment law. Her books and articles address problems of expropriation, traditional and modern common property regimes, environmental law, environmental ethics, land regulation, water law, and natural resource law. Her current research explores the structure and limitations of tradeable rights in environmental resources, comparisons between environmental and intellectual property, and the general relationship of commerce to the environment.
