Has carried out fieldwork with the Blackfoot people, in Iran, and in South India, and published books on the theory and methodology of ethnomusicology, on the classical music of Iran, and the musical culture of the Blackfoot. His interests include the comparative study of improvisational systems in music, the adaptation and use of Western music in Asian and native American societies, and ethnomusicological approaches to Western musical culture, as well as the intellectual history of his discipline.
