Through a series of fundamental papers, Menge has elucidated the interplay between top-down and bottom-up forces in the structuring of ecological communities. He pioneered long-term studies within individual sites, and extended those studies to regional and global biogeographical scales. He has been truly integrative in his reach, explicating the roles of predation, competition and disturbance as structuring forces; informed the debate about patterns of diversity; and added substance to the literature on keystone species, recruitment and cross-ecosystem linkages.  His output is a prodigious and synthetic collection of foundational papers, published in the leading journals in the field.
