Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and the Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics. Leading specialist in the linguistic structure and history of the Greek language. Authority on Balkan linguistics and on general historical linguistics. Known for his monograph on language change through contact in the Balkans. Research spans the Indic, Germanic, Italic, and Anatolian language groups. Has served on the editorial board of several key linguistic periodicals, including Language, Journal of  Modern Greek Studies, and Diachronia.
