Professor Emeritus, Departments of English, Italian, and Medieval Studies. Covering the range of Western thought, work focused on a set of interrelated topics and issues including the role of texts in creating intellectual communities; the connections between reading and philosophy; and the function of meditation in the development and transformation of the self. Shows how key moments in the history of thought can be charted by tracing the changing uses of these terms and methods, for example, the differing functions of meditation in Augustine and Descartes. Books include Myth and Science in the Twelfth Century (1972), The Implications of Literacy (1983) and Augustine the Reader (1996).
