Focus is on rapid cellular signaling mechanisms involving ion channels and intracellular second messengers. He described the mode of action of many neurotoxins and clinical drugs on channels, measured the pore diameter of several ion channels using substitute ions, analyzed mechanisms of channel modulation by G-protein coupled receptors, described the signaling mechanisms for hormone secretion from pituitary cells and pineal glands, and has analyzed dynamic release and uptake of intracellular calcium by cellular organelles. Currently measuring and modeling the dynamics of GPCR activation and phosphoinositide metabolism and signaling in living cells. Hille writes a widely used textbook on ion channels.
