He helped to start the Visiting Program in the early fifties that allowed Scientists, especially from Japan, to spend 2-5 years at NIH. The Cyanogen Bromide Cleavage became a milestone in protein chemistry and made possible the synthesis of insulin by genetic engineering. The isolation of batrachotoxin from poison-arrow frog of Colombia opened new vistas in neurochemistry. The NIH-Shift shed new light on the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters.
