Hoffman's main research lies in the field of climatic stress. He studies physiological and molecular traits that enable organisms to adapt to climatic and other stresses. He has discovered examples of rapid genetic adaptation to climate change, as well as examples of genetic resistance to adaptation, known as biomonitoring. He has developed practical methods to detect and monitor environmental stresses in nature. He also uses his insights from basic research in ecology and evolution to develop better ways to control and transform pest species. Hoffmann co-leads promising field trials in Australia and Indonesia using Wolbachia-transinfected mosquitoes to control the spread of dengue fever.
