Dr. Casadevall revolutionized our views on immunity by showing that antibodies protect against intracellular pathogens, fungi and mycobacteria, each previously thought to be controlled by cell-mediated immunity. He established C. neoformans as an intracellular pathogen and showed how melanin contributed to pathogenesis. He brought mAbs to C. neoformans and melanin to clinical trials. He is an original thinker who proposed the 'Damage-response framework' to account for both the host and microbe in virulence. He developed the concept that virulence in soil fungi emerged accidentally from interactions with other microbes. He pioneered research on scientific misconduct, showing it caused most retractions.
