He entered the Manhatten Project a physical chemist and left it a chemical engineer. After 25 years in industry, he joined the academe in 1967, conducting research in removal of dust and sulfur species from gases, high-velocity fluid beds, gasification and liquefaction of coal, and (most recently) vibrated beds. He was an active professional musician, 1953-1960 and 1978-1983, performing Medieval and Renaissance repertoire in New York Pro Musica and The New River Consort, respectively. A desire to understand the ways of bureaucrats managing technology led to an interest in the evolution of human behavior, especially in the coevolution of humankind's curious sexualities and equally curious Ultra-society.
