His work has focused on the Renaissance (Montaigne), and the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (from Baudelaire to Proust, whose Recherche he edited), as well as on issues of literary theory (quotation, authorship) and on the history of literary criticism. He has written on cultural issues in France. He is also Professor emeritus at Collège de France, Paris, and member of the Académie française.
