Research centers on genetic control of oogenesis and developement of the germ line in the embryo. He has identified some of the key components necessary for the initiation of the germ line in the Drosophila embryo. His recent work concentrates on the initiation of oogenesis by ovarian germline stem cells and their subsequent differentiation. He has also characterized the process of accumulation of yolk in the oocyte and currently studies the role of juvenile hormone in this process.
