Anthony P Monaco is internationally recognized for pathbreaking work in genetics including identifying the gene responsible for Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy, pioneering cloning methodologies and chromosome maps in the first phase of the human genome project, and leading research in the genetics of human cognitive neurodevelopmental disorders. His research underlies the only drug to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy and has also informed new understanding of the history of human cognitive evolution and achievement. He served as pro-vice chancellor at the University of Oxford from 2007 to 2011, and the president of Tufts University from 2011-2023. In 2023 he joined the faculty at Tufts as a University Professor to continue his research.
