Research centers on Italian secular music, both vocal and instrumental, 1550-1620, and on forms of patronage in this area, and on Northern European art music, 1800-1914. He does both archival and critical-analytical work in the first area, and critical/analytical work in the second, including writings in philosophical aesthetics.
